IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals mull David Warner for captaincy | Cricket News – Times of India

May ask Sarfaraz to be wicketkeeper
NEW DELHI: As Rishabh Pant braces for a long absence from cricket following an accident, Delhi Capitals are in a fix to find a replacement for their captain and star wicketkeeper.
TOI understands that Pant is almost certain to miss this year’s IPL while his focus would entirely be on somehow getting fit for the ODI World Cup in India later in the year.
However, it has been learnt that the Capitals management is contemplating to approach David Warner for leading the team in Pant’s absence. Sources also said that the team may ask Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan to don the gloves if need be. Capitals have built a team around Pant and his absence would mean they will want an Indian wicketkeeper as his replacement.
With Pant firing for the last five seasons, Capitals have not invested in wicketkeepers. They do have England wicketkeeper Philip Salt in their ranks this year but to fit in an overseas wicketkeeper would disrupt the balance of the team.
“Pant has been the mainstay of the middle-order. Warner has the experience of leading IPL teams. The management will speak to him. The middle-order needs an impactful Indian batter now. Sarfaraz will be asked to keep wickets if the combination asks for it. Meanwhile, the team will be looking for a domestic wicketkeeper or a strong batter,” a source told TOI on Wednesday.
There will be an eye on Bengal’s 20-year-old left-handed wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel.
If Capitals play Salt, then they will have to depend on Indian pacers as either Anrich Nortje or Mustafizur Rahman would have to be benched. Mitch Marsh has provided them a solid allround option and it will be difficult to bench him. Rovman Powell too, had come through really well during the last IPL. All eyes will be on Sarfaraz and India’s U-19 World Cup-winning captain Yash Dhull now.
