IPL 2023: Royal Challengers Bangalore waiting for their domestic talent to prosper | Cricket News – Times of India
It has continued this season as well. From Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal to Kolkata Knight Riders’ Rinku Singh to Mumbai Indians’ Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera, the franchises have invested in grooming them and are reaping rewards.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about Royal Challengers Bangalore, who have seen their uncapped, as well as other Indian batters — excluding Virat Kohli, struggling to push them over the line.
The scenario repeated in Tuesday’s defeat against MI when RCB were well-placed at 152/5 after 15 overs thanks to Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell’s 120-run partnership, but they failed to kick-in thereafter and scored just 47 runs in the next five overs even with the experienced Dinesh Karthik and Kedar Jadhav at the crease.
Earlier, Anuj Rawat and Mahipal Lomror departed without any significant contributions. On a belter of a pitch at the Wankhede Stadium, skipper du Plessis felt that RCB fell “short by 20 runs” as MI chased down the total with ease.
Aggrieved he should be as most the runs for RCB have come off the bat of du Plessis (576), Kohli (420) and Glenn Maxwell (330). The top-three have scored 1,326 runs between them which is almost 72 % of the 1,857 scored by RCB in 11 matches so far.
They have also scored 16 of the 17 fifties hit by them. The next best is Dinesh Karthik (140), who was expected to take RCB over the line in the death overs but has failed to do so. What has let them down is the constant failures of the youngsters Mahipal Lomror (133 runs in nine matches), Shahbaz Ahmed (42 in eight), Anuj Rawat (39 in six) and Suyash Prabhudessai (35 in five).
RCB coach Sanjay Bangar agreed that youngsters haven’t got going yet.
“They (young Indian batters) are progressing, not at a very good pace. Lomror has taken his chances well but somebody like Rawat or even Shahbaz have unfortunately not been able to capitalise on the opportunities. That is the learning, you have to be patient with youngsters and it takes time. Maybe you can relate it to the example of Rinku Singh, this is his season but he had to spend a lot of time and the kind of work KKR did with him over the last 3-4 years is now paying off,” Bangar said.
