Meet Suyash Sharma: The 19 year old rockstar who ‘rocked’ RCB in the IPL
On Thursday, for the first time in IPL, nine wickets were pocketed by spinners in an innings as the KKR trio of Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Sharma bowled out RCB for 123 runs in 17.4 overs, thereby recording an 81-run victory.

KKR skipper Nitish Rana was all praise for the 19-year-old Sharma. “Suyash is a normal leg-spinner. But he has an X-factor,” he stated at a post-match press conference. Talking about the youngster’s ability, Rana said, “he has a very high arm speed with an orthodox action, so it’s very difficult to pick him. As he is very quick through the air, the batter will be in trouble if there’s even a little bit of doubt while playing him.”
The skipper brought him into the attack after experienced Narine and Chakravarthy did the initial damage, picking up two and three wickets respectively.
“I knew Suyash would do well but I wanted to bring in Sunil in the Powerplay and then Varun and both provided us with breakthroughs. But it was important to take wickets in the middle overs too and Suyash did that for us,” Rana added.
The Delhi batter felt Sharma, coming as an impact player in place of Venkatesh Iyer and picking up three for 30, still has a long way to go. “I am sure he will learn and mature as he gets to play more,” he said.
Coach Chandrakant Pandit too was happy with his bowlers. “Varun bowled extremely well, even Sunny (Narine). And the newcomer (Sharma) provided support. We saw him in trial matches and were extremely happy with the way he bowled. He’s quick through the air, difficult to pick. He’s inexperienced but has a very good attitude,” he said.
Rana is particularly happy to see Chakravarthy back among wickets. “Varun’s comeback is very important for us. He didn’t perform well last season, but is bowling well this time,” he said.
However, RCB head coach Sanjay Bangar feels other teams too have spinners who are as good as those in KKR.
“They are very good bowlers no doubt but other teams too have good spinners. There are (Yuzvendra) Chahal and (Ravichandran) Ashwin. Karn Sharma bowled well for us too. The quality of leg-spinners is good in this IPL,” he stated.
The former India all-rounder felt RCB batters erred in tackling KKR’s spinners. “You must try and play as forward as possible. It can be risky if you play even a little bit square. A number of our batters got bowled through the gap inside of the bat which you do not tend to do against bowlers who don’t turn the ball that much. Probably those were errors they made under pressure,” he said.
