Jaguars’ Matthew Wright bends a bizarre field goal to tie game vs. Dolphins: ‘A beautiful draw’

Bend it like Beckham, to the truest sense of the phrase.

In the late stages of the fourth quarter, the Jaguars were down three points to the Dolphins, when kicker Matt Wright kicked an absolutely bizarre, curving kick that went from about five yards wide right to just inside the upright to tie the game.

Wright would put through two kicks on the day, with the second kick a game-tier — and one of the most bizarre kicks you’ll probably ever see. The attempt looks like it’s sailing way, way right, until it curves like a slider and nails the inside corner to give the Jags three points.

If you weren’t convinced that the ball was going wide, CBS play-by-play man Kevin Harlan was, with a very definitive “Nope” as the ball left the foot of Wright.

Interestingly enough, the Jaguars entered Sunday’s game vs. the Dolphins without a field goal on the season. Wright would hit two kicks on the day, the second a very, very memorable one. It’s even more fitting considering that Londoners are likely very used to seeing kicks like that hit the net in soccer games: Except with the spherical ball, usually coming off the foot of Harry Kane.

The Dolphins would come up empty on the ensuing possession, and Wright would later hit the game-winning field goal with time expiring. The 53-yarder to win the game, though, was much straighter and truer.

The win gave the Jaguars their first W in the Urban Meyer-Trevor Lawrence era, while it torpedoed the spiraling Dolphins to 1-5 on the season. 

At least for one day, Wright can live up to his namesake.
