James Cameron Shares the Wild Response He Received for the Avatar 4 Script; Rotten Tomatoes Score Out for the Sequel
While Avatar: The Way of Water has yet to release in theatres around the world, director James Cameron has already made fans giddy with an update for the fourth installment of the series.
In a recent interview with Collider, the famed director shared some details on the script writing process for the sequel and the franchise at large. Following the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, the series will receive three more films in the year 2024, 2026 and 2028.
Cameron revealed that he took a page out of Peter Jackson’s book when it came to writing the screenplay for the sequels the same way the latter dished out The Lord of the Rings trilogy, where he wrote the story for all the films together.
“I felt I had to do the same thing. I had to play this as if the books already existed,” said Cameron. “So, the only way for us to do that was to write all the scripts and let the actors read all the scripts and see where their characters were going and what it all meant.”
Additionally, he shared that he got better when it came to writing the script with each Avatar movie, to the point where he received a wild response to the crazy Avatar 4 script from studio executives, with no notes for any rewrites whatsoever. “When I turned in the script for 4, the studio executive, creative executive over the films wrote me an email that said, ‘Holy f**k,’” shared Cameron.

And judging by the critical reviews for Avatar: The Way of Water, it seems like the studio will have no problem in producing and marketing the remaining films in the series. At the time of writing, the sequel garnered over 188 reviews with an 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and thanks to the film’s beautiful visuals, it seems like the audience will give an equal if not better reviews.
