James Gunn: DC Is ‘Working On’ Getting Wonder Woman Into More Animation

DC Studios head James Gunn teased that DC is working on an animated Wonder Woman project.

On Twitter, the conversation started when Gunn responded to a fan that was asking for a Wonder Woman animated series. The fan wrote, “Diana is a character with such a rich cast with so much untapped potential and stories, it’s beyond past time for it to be explored.” Gunn responded to this tweet, simply saying, “Agreed. Working on it.”

Gunn’s short message sent fans into speculation mode, prompting the DC Studios co-CEO to clarify his original post. When a different Twitter user speculated that DC isn’t working on an animated show, Gunn said, “No we’re working on getting Wonder Woman into more animation. I agree that there hasn’t been enough of her in that area and was one of the first things I brought up to the animation folks.”

Wonder Woman previously got a direct-to-DVD animated movie in 2009. We were fans of the movie at the time, saying, “Wonder Woman offers plenty of epic adventure and sly humor to make fans happy.”

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU doesn’t have any Wonder Woman-centric projects officially announced, following reports that the new DC leaders decided not to move forward with Wonder Woman 3. Gal Gadot could still have a role in the DCU, though, with Gunn saying, “We’ve talked to Gal [Gadot]. She’s up for doing stuff. We’re not sure what we’re going to do with that.”

The DCU does have a Wonder Woman-adjacent project in the form of Paradise Lost, a new DCU TV show set on Wonder Woman’s birthplace Themyscira in the days before Diana. The show will be a “Game of Thrones-type story” that “involves all the darkness and drama and political intrigue behind this society of only women,” according to Gunn and Safran.
