James Gunn Will Not Make Superman: Legacy a Comedy Film
James Gunn is all set for the release of his final instalment to MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy series, which comes out on May 5, 2023. After its release, James Gunn will shift his complete focus towards his newly announced DC Entertainment Universe, and the first movie he will be working on will be Superman: Legacy.
Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. pic.twitter.com/ohQNV8nI4g

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter for the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn shed some light about his plans for Superman: Legacy, too. Gunn started off by stating that he relates to Superman as “he’s everything I am.” He added that Superman is an outsider as he as alien origin; however, he is also the “ultimate insider” as he is the one and only Superman, which is also something Gunn feels like.
Moreover, Gunn stated that working on characters that aren’t as known, such as Guardians or Peacemaker, is easier to take on compared to Superman, who is someone that everyone knows about. Superman being such a well-known personality globally was also a reason for Gunn not taking on a Superman movie back in 2018.
He is now wondering how to make his Superman movie different from previous movies based on the character, while still paying respect to them. Furthermore, he added that Superman: Legacy will not be a comedy movie, as his Superman will not be like any character that he has worked on before. Now, there’s just one question: Who is going to be the next Superman that will spearhead the new DCEU?
