James Harden expresses intent to stay with Brooklyn Nets despite not signing extension

The Brooklyn Nets may have lost their season opener to the Milwaukee Bucks, but they did have a win of some sorts in the postgame.

Star guard James Harden signaled his intent to remain with the franchise long-term despite not signing an extension before the October 18 deadline.

According to Spotrac, Harden has a $47.3 million player option for 2022-23 which he could opt in to and sign a four-year extension next offseason.

Although he didn’t get the deal done this offseason, he says the Nets “have nothing to worry about”.

“Honestly, I’m just focused on getting healthy, getting my body right and then preparing for a great season,” Harden told reporters postgame. “The contract, the money is going to be there.”

“I don’t plan on leaving this organization and the situation that we have. So my focus, honestly, is just focus on the season and then winning the championship. The contract and all that stuff will bear itself out, but my focus is going to be locked on this season.”

Harden finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the 127-104 loss to the Bucks, recording a 6-for-16 mark from the field in 30 minutes of court time.

The Nets enter the season as championship favourites, with Harden repeating his desire to focus on what’s happening on the court for now.

“From top to bottom the communication has been unbelievable, it’s been amazing. I feel at home. It’s nothing to worry about. For me individually I just want to focus on this year and that’s it.”

The Nets have two nights off before they continue their season on the road, this time against the Philadelphia 76ers.
