Jamie Carragher left red-faced with late live TV appearance

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was left red-faced after turning up late to CBS Sports’ Champions League coverage on Tuesday. The broadcast was live from New York in a special show as Carragher was due to be sat alongside Thierry Henry and Micah Richards, but left the duo in the lurch as he was made to apologise for his timekeeping.

Host Kate Abdo joked at Carragher as the punditry team sat down for their broadcast. “And look who has made it to the studio,” Abdo said. “So kind of you to join us Jamie Carragher, a little bit late but better late than never.”

The Sky Sports man then began speaking without picking up his microphone as the audience could not hear his response, before he was prompted by Abdo to pick up the microphone. “So it was a bit difficult getting through passport control,” Carragher replied. “I don’t really know [why], maybe it’s the criticism, maybe [Christian] Pulisic’s dad was the fella doing the passports.

“I don’t know, I have given him a little bit of stick haven’t I? You are the warm-up act, but the main man is here now. That was the warm-up, get the crowd going, let’s lift the atmosphere.”

Carragher has criticised Pulisic on the American broadcast previously, claiming that he is “not good enough” to play for Chelsea. “Do you think he’s not playing because of Thomas Tuchel or himself?” Carragher said last month.

“I don’t think he’s good enough to play for Chelsea. I think he’s been there for a few years now. I think he’s had enough opportunities. I don’t think a new manager is gonna completely rejuvenate him … he’s gonna be playing week in, week out. I just think he’s a squad player for Chelsea no matter who the manager is.”

Henry and Richards were competing in a drill outside with former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel when Carragher turned up to join the team. Richards and Henry pointed into the distance before the former Reds defender emerged and was given a big hug by Richards.

“I’m back!” Carragher said when he greeted the rest of the pundits. “So what are we talking about, [Erling] Haaland?” Carragher was then mocked by Schmeichel. “First of all I know what you are going to say,” the ex-goalkeeper said. “The only way to stop Haaland is to kick him, and you are an expert.”

Carragher said that he used to try that tactic when facing Henry and Arsenal but it failed to work against the Frenchman. When news spread on social media that Carragher had arrived at the set, he took to Twitter to respond with a GIF from The Office UK of Ricky Gervais as David Brent singing the P!nk song ‘Get The Party Started’.
