Jayant Yadav to stay back in South Africa for ODIs | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Jayant Yadav will stay back in South Africa for the three-match ODI series. Jayant will be part of the ODI team as a replacement for Washington Sundar who has tested positive for Covid-19 before departure.
Rest of the players selected for the ODIs, (Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Venkatesh Iyer, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Prasidh Krishna) departed for Cape Town on Wednesday morning.
“It has been decided that Jayant will stay back in South Africa. There was very little time to get any other player inside the bubble in Mumbai,” a BCCI source told TOI.
The off-spinner from Haryana has impressed head coach Rahul Dravid and his ability with the bat seems to have earned him points. With no Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel not available for the series due to injuries, there are concerns over the depth in the batting line-up. Washington’s ability to bat down the order was seen as the link between the middle-order and the lower order.
Jayant has a sound batting technique and is reliable down the order. He has a Test century against his name too. He is being seen as a like-for-like replacement for Washington.
It will be interesting to see if he gets a game though. Ravichandran Ashwin’s re-emergence as a white-ball spinner could keep Jayant waiting.
