Joe Biden Signs Executive Order Providing Guidelines Around Generative AI

U.S. President Joe Biden has taken a step towards regulating the use of generative artificial intelligence by signing an executive order that provides a framework for responsible development and deployment of the technology.

The Biden Administration has tasked several government agencies to create standards to protect against using AI to develop biological materials, create standards to detect and protect Americans from AI-generated fraud and deception, and ensure the government is using AI ethically and efficiently in accordance to its guidelines and any subsequent legislation that may get passed by Congress and become law.

“As we advance this agenda at home, the Administration will work with allies and partners abroad on a strong international framework to govern the development and use of AI,” the administration said.

This is the Biden Administration’s latest attempt at regulating the use of AI after the technology saw a surge in the last year alone. In September, the President released an AI Bill of Rights that outlined some principles that AI developers should follow. The administration later negotiated with several big tech companies that dabble in AI, with the likes of Google and Nvidia pledging to develop AI responsibly.

Over the last year, the use of artificial intelligence has greatly increased, from the rise of ChatGPT to the possible concerns of how AI can be used in various industries, including gaming and entertainment if left unchecked.

While Congress has yet to pass any legislation regulating the tech, Senator Richard Blumenthal said last month that he hopes to pass AI-centric legislation by the end of the year. That same month, Blumenthal, along with Senator Josh Hawley, released a bipartisan framework for AI legislation.
