John Wick: Director Chad Stahelski Talks About the Possibilities of Chapter 5

John Wick director Chad Stahelski was recently asked about the shocking ending of Chapter 4 in a recent interview. Stahelski revealed that the “ambiguity” that the audience have spot suggesting more instalments coming up has been a deliberate addition. Here’s more on what the Director has to say about John Wick Chapter 5.

John Wick Chapter 5 Possibilites

Addressing the elephant in the room, (spoiler alert!) John Wick seemingly succumbs to his injuries and dies at the end of Chapter 4. Seemingly because the final scene in front of John and Helen’s grave has his dog looking to the left. While we never get to see what he’s looking at, it is likely a deliberate shot, which Stahelski confirmed to Comicbook.com. So does the scene have any signficance in bringing back John Wick, alive, or does it “leave the door open for a future story”? Here’s what Stahelski has to say.

“It’s both. I’m just not smart enough, or creative enough right now to crack that code. So, to both your questions, one, yes, that is a very deliberate shot with the dog. That’s meant, in my little mind, to [frick] with you a little bit, because ambiguity, like is he still or not? Because again, the whole thing is a myth. It’s a campfire story, all four movies. So, in my mind, John Wick, is he real? Is he not real? It’s a story about fate and consequence. So, either way, John Wick died at the end of that movie.

Now, is John still alive? Maybe, but the persona of the assassin, has had to pass away so that John can move forward. Take that metaphorically, take that physically, whatever you want to do. Is there a body in the ground? Is there not a body in the ground? Right?”

As for the question of John Wick 5, Stahelski doesn’t clearly say it is coming for sure, but the idea is definitely not off the table for both actor Keanu Reeves and Stahelski. He says,

“If I woke up tomorrow and I was like, I got it! I got the perfect way, and we really believe in it, I’d go make that movie tomorrow. I just haven’t come up with that thought yet.”

John Wick Chapter 4 Director’s Cut

Stahelski has also revealed that a Director’s Cut for John Wick Chapter 4 is already in the making. While details of the launch of the extended cut haven’t yet been revealed, we already know of two spinoff shows of the franchise slated for release soon. The Continental is set to premiere later this year in September on Peacock TV, followed by Ballerina starring Ana De Armas, releasing on June 7, 2024.
