Jon Favreau Compares Pedro Pascal’s Mandalorian to The Last of Us’ Joel
When The Mandalorian Season 3 starts next week, Pedro Pascal will be the star of two of television’s biggest shows at the same time. That fact’s not lost on Mandalorian co-creator Jon Favreau, who has been happily watching Pascal in HBO’s The Last of Us as a fan.
“It’s a great show, by the way,” Favreau told Empire. “I’ve been on the road, I missed the last one, so I don’t want any spoilers. [Pascal]’s great!”
Joel and Mando are very different roles for Pascal, but it’s almost impossible to not see the similarities between the setups of The Last of Us and The Mandalorian. Both shows focus on a protective father figure escorting a child across a dangerous world. Favreau commented on the “central relationship” at the heart of both The Last of Us and The Mandalorian.
“It’s amazing how much [Pascal]’s really cornered the market on this dad, protective father archetype,” Favreau said. “But they’re different characters, though! Completely different characters, but both have that same… There’s a central relationship of modelling a protective father in a not very communicative relationship.”
Pascal himself has also compared the two series, saying the two shows are both “in good hands because [the creators] love it so much.”
Another thing the two shows have in common is their immense popularity. The Last of Us is outpacing House of the Dragon’s viewership, while The Mandalorian is the most-watched show on Disney+.
