Jon Gruden contract breakdown: Raiders salary, record & how much longer he’ll be in Las Vegas

“Teflon Jon” is in for a big year.

Jon Gruden and the Raiders are entering a massive year in the AFC West, with Vegas rolling the dice and hoping to make noise in a very difficult division. Well, a massive year is only befitting of a massive contract, and Gruden’s got one of the biggest in the NFL.

After three years of bettering records, the Raiders are going to have to get busy winning or get busy rebuilding:  Las Vegas is 19-29 over the last three years and there’s some tumult surrounding general manager Mike Mayock and the team’s personnel.

While the Black and Silver has been left black and blue in recent years, there’s one thing that’s not suffering from any kind of bruising or denting, and that’s Gruden’s bank account. Here’s what you need to know about the serious cash that “Chucky” is raking in as the pit boss in Vegas.

Jon Gruden contract breakdown

The Raiders must be a fan of nice, round numbers: On Jan. 8, 2018, Gruden signed a 10-year, $100 million contract to return to the helm in Oakland. That’s the richest contract for a head coach in NFL history, though Gruden is third in the NFL in AAV behind Patriots HC Bill Belichick ($12.5 million) and Seattle’s Pete Carroll ($11 million).

Interestingly, the contract also includes something usually reserved for players: Gruden’s deal with the Raiders contains a no-trade clause, which prevents “Chucky” from facing the same fate that he did the first time around with the Raiders, when he was traded to Tampa Bay.

The Buccaneers traded two first-round picks, two second-round picks and $8 million in cash to the Raiders in exchange for Gruden. Gruden would sign a five-year extension with the Buccaneers, over five years and $17.5 million.

How much is left on Gruden’s contract?

After the 2021 season, Gruden has six years left on his contract, with the deal expiring after the 2027 season — should he make it that far.

Gruden is entering the fourth year of his 10-year pact with the Raiders and is coming off an 8-8 season in 2020. The Raiders have yet to make the playoffs in his second tenure with the organization.

Gruden, in four prior years as boss in Oakland, had two playoff appearances and a 2-2 record overall.

Jon Gruden career record

Gruden enters the 2021 season with a 114-110 career record, not including the playoffs. Gruden has just five losing seasons as a head coach in the league, but just four playoff appearances, too.

Gruden won Super Bowl 37 with the Buccaneers, dominating his former team, the Raiders.

Overall, Gruden has a playoff record of 5-3 in four playoff appearances across 14 seasons as a head coach in the NFL. He had a lengthy break away from the field between 2009 and 2017, when he was a member of the “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth.
