Jose Mourinho swears at referee in car park after Europa League agony

Jose Mourinho is facing a potential UEFA investigation after he was filmed exploding furiously at the Europa League final officials – namely referee Anthony Taylor – in the Puskas Arena car park after Roma’s 4-1 penalty-shootout defeat to Sevilla. The Special One’s side had led the fiercely-contested showpiece in the first half when Paulo Dybala slid the Italian giants in front.

However, Sevilla rallied back and were level after the break when Gianluca Mancini turned the ball into his own net to breathe new life into the Andalusians, who were chasing a record seventh Europa League title.

Somewhat painfully, the two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes of gruelling action but Roma were adamant they should have had a penalty when the ball struck the arm of Fernando.

At the time, Mourinho exploded on the touchline at Premier League referee Taylor as he was adamant his side should have been awarded a spot-kick. The man in the middle had already overturned a penalty he had previously awarded Sevilla upon the advice of VAR official Stuart Attwell.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss was also adamant Erik Lamela should have been given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Nonetheless, Mourinho was denied his shot at history after his defenders Mancini and Roger Ibanez missed from 12 yards as Sevilla ruthlessly converted all four of their penalties.

Yet there was further controversy as Argentina World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel initially missed his match-winning spot-kick after he was denied by Rui Patricio but VAR official Attwell ordered a retake for encroachment.

Just to sub salt into Roma’s wounds, he made no mistakes second time around as Sevilla etched their name onto the trophy.

Mourinho was absolutely furious as the result means his side are also denied a place in next season’s Champions League because they are currently sixth in the Serie A table with just one match left to play.

He threw his runners up medal into the crowd but that was tame compared to what happened next.

Italian television outlet Sportitalia captured video footage of Mourinho approaching referee Taylor and the officials in the underground car park long after the match had finished, as he launched a staggering foul-mouthed verbal attack.

Mourinho can be heard swearing multiple times, shouting: “It’s a f****** disgrace man!”

After a few words in Italian, Mourinho then walked closer to the vehicle transporting the officials and added: “F*** off! Congratulations, f****** c****.”

The Portuguese boss refused to provide assurances over his future following the completion of the match.

“I want to stay at AS Roma but my players deserve more… and I also deserve more,” Mourinho said.

“I’m too tired to do the job as a trainer, as a spokesman of the club, to fight every time. I want to stay but with the right conditions to give my best.”

He later added, after criticising the officiating: “I’ve never gone home prouder than today, even when I won. We had also worked hard on penalties but we missed two – but all together, not only the penalty takers.

“Congratulations to Sevilla, but also congratulations to my players. The boys must go home peacefully, with pride for having done what they have done. These are my boys from Budapest.”
