Joshua considering Wilder teammate for next opponent with ‘calls made’
Deontay Wilder’s trainer Malik Scott has confirmed that he has received a ‘couple of calls’ about a potential fight between Anthony Joshua and Gerald Washington. Washington (20-5-1) is coming off back-to-back losses to Charles Martin and Ali Eren Demirezen but Scott affirms that El Gallo Negro is ‘ten times better now’.
“For what I’m hearing AJ’s looking for a kind of a step-down fight. He don’t want that kind of work right now but if he wants that then I have Gerald Washington and Gerald Washington is ready to fight almost anybody,” Scott told ESNEWS.
“I got a couple calls about it yesterday, I didn’t even tell Gerald about it. If AJ is really really interested in that then Gerald is ten times better than he was last time they saw him fight so it would be a good element of surprise for them.
“Plus, I think Gerald has the ability to beat almost any heavyweight in the world out there, it’s just about staying alert all the way through the fight. I have got calls from camps telling me that ‘yo, Gerald is out here doing very good’ and I watched him box Deontay for the last three weeks, he gave us a great look. He really gave us a great look when he came back from the Usyk camp like real real good.”
In August, Eddie Hearn had spoken about Joshua going on a world tour with the Watford powerhouse expected to fight in London, Beijing, Australia, the Middle East, and America. Zhang Zhilei was mentioned as a possible opponent for Beijing while Demsey McKean vs Joshua has been branded an ‘incredible night of boxing’ by Hearn for the Gabba cricket ground in Brisbane, Australia.
