Kareem Hunt Sr. the latest Browns father to rip team, Baker Mayfield: ‘He’s scared to throw the ball’

If the Browns thought their daddy issues were gone after Odell Beckham Jr.’s departure, think again.

Another player’s father has stepped up to call Cleveland’s offense out after its 16-10 loss against the Ravens on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 12. That would be Kareem Hunt Sr.

Hunt Sr. took to Facebook to “state facts” about the Browns’ offense. Those facts included criticism of Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, who Hunt Sr. said was “limping” and “scared to throw the ball” against Baltimore.

To be fair to Hunt, this isn’t quite the same as the Odell Beckham Sr. situation. Beckham Sr. posted a video showcasing numerous throws that highlighted the failed connection between Mayfield and his son when the younger Beckham was looking to part ways with the Browns. That caused a stir in the Cleveland locker room amid Mayfield and Beckham’s already fraying relationship.

Hunt is more just blowing off some steam and frustration after a loss. He may also be a bit miffed that his son received just seven total touches in his return from a five-week absence with a calf injury.

And while Hunt Sr. is being critical of Mayfield, he also seemed to blame the team more for leaving the quarterback on the field despite several injuries with which he is dealing.

“They know he’s hurt,” Hunt wrote in the post.

Mayfield has a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder and a broken humerus bone. He has missed just one game — a Week 7 tilt with the Broncos — because of those injuries. However, since then he has added a knee bruise and a heel injury to his growing list of maladies.

Mayfield has worn a harness to protect his shoulder, but he was visibly in discomfort on the field Sunday night. He limped at times and was bloodied at various points throughout the evening. It’s clear those injuries affected him in his 18-of-37 passing performance for 247 yards and a touchdown.

Beyond that, Mayfield’s performance this season has been below-average. He has posted a QBR of 37.9 this season, which is good for 26th among 32 qualified NFL quarterbacks.

But Cleveland and its coaching staff know that. So while Hunt may have a point about Mayfield’s struggles, his bringing it up does little to help the Browns as they navigate a bumpy 3-5 stretch. If anything, it will just create more tension between Mayfield and his playmakers as the 6-6 Browns look to improve on offense and make a playoff run.
