Katie Boulter takes advantage of Just Stop Oil protest to pull off Wimbledon win
Katie Boulter managed to brush off an interruption from a Just Stop Oil protestor on Court 18 to win her first-round match at Wimbledon against Daria Saville. The British No 1 was originally set to play her first-round match on Tuesday, but the duo could only manage 11 games before rain stopped play for the day.
They picked up with Saville leading 6-5 in the first set, but Boulter was on serve and quickly forced a first-set tiebreak. It was the Australian though who took an early lead in the tiebreak, going up 4-2.
But the match was soon disrupted by a protestor breaking out onto the court with the man being wrestled to the ground by security. The Just Stop Oil protestor had thrown orange confetti onto the court, just as two people did earlier on the same court for Grigor Dimitrov’s match against Sho Shimabukuro.
Once the protestor was taken off the court, the confetti and puzzle pieces had to be cleared up with both players even getting involved in the clear up job. They were back on court ready to continue the tiebreak 10 minutes later and Boulter went on a charge to win five straight points and clinch the first set.
Saville appeared frustrated and flustered in the interval, but Boulter was able to build on the momentum from her first set win. The British star got the double break to take a 5-1 lead before Saville threatened a mini fightback with a break of her own.
