Klopp learns lesson as Nunez proves point in Liverpool win vs Fulham
Nunez proves a point
Serenaded by the fans with a standing ovation the reward for his efforts, Nunez felt the love at last.
It hasn’t been the easiest of debut seasons for the Uruguayan since his £85million switch from Benfica, with red cards and troubles in front of goal demoting him to the bench in recent weeks. But when he won the penalty for Salah to open the scoring, there was an appreciation at how this could be only the start of Nunez’s story.
The 23-year-old may have feared for his place once it emerged Luis Diaz was back from injury, especially after Cody Gakpo was signed in January. With so many attackers and only three spaces to fill, Klopp would have been keen for Nunez to demonstrate how he can fit into his team, as the German has always preferred a false nine to play centrally rather than a natural No 9.
And in front of the raucous Liverpool support, he responded superbly. From the off, he was energetic in hovering in the channels, popping up with some dangerous crosses from the right-hand side as he swapped with Diaz throughout the half. His moment arrived when Issa Diop dwelled on the ball and swung wildly, catching Nunez who made the most of the tackle, as the referee pointed to his spot.
Without his efforts, it never would have happened – and Klopp knows he has a striker he can rely on to contribute elsewhere, even if the goals have dried up.
