Lane Kiffin contract details: Ole Miss puts coaching rumors to rest with extension

Lane Kiffin’s name has been attached to nearly every coaching rumor of late. That activity can be put to rest.

Ole Miss announced Saturday that it had agreed to a new contract with Kiffin after he guided the Rebels to their first 10-win regular season in school history.

“We are committed to winning championships at Ole Miss, and Coach Kiffin is the person to lead us to those heights,” athletic director Keith Carter said in a statement. “With his winning edge, offensive vision and recruiting prowess, he has quickly cemented our team among the best in the nation, and this is just the start. With major facility projects on the horizon, we are investing in this program like never before and look forward to building on the foundation that Coach Kiffin has established.”

The Rebels are eighth in the College Football Playoff rankings and are headed to a New Year’s Six bowl.

How much money will Kiffin make in his new deal? Sporting News takes a look.

Lane Kiffin contract details

Kiffin’s new contract will make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the sport. According to ESPN, he will make about $7.5 million annually.

The Clarion Ledger reported that the new deal will keep him in Oxford through 2025, adding a year to his contract. Also according to the report, under Mississippi law, Kiffin can only be contracted for four years at a time as a public employee.

When Kiffin first signed with Ole Miss, he was set to make $3.9 million in 2020 and receive a salary increase of $100,000 for each season he remained with the school, according to an earlier report from the Clarion Ledger.

He then signed a one-year extension before the 2021 season, increasing his salary to $4.5 million, the newspaper reported. As part of the agreement, he would receive $150,000 per SEC win starting with the fifth in a season, and an extra $100,000 for beating nonconference Power 5 opponents. He would pocket an additional $150,000 for reaching the SEC championship game and $400,000 for winning the conference. This season, Ole Miss went 6-2 in the SEC and defeated Louisville.

Specific bonuses in his new contract have yet to be reported, but he’s likely to be well-compensated for any such milestones that are reached in the highly competitive SEC West.

Highest-paid college football coaches

Kiffin’s new pact puts him among the highest-paid coaches in college football, and it is the fourth major contract handed out this season, along with Brian Kelly at LSU, Lincoln Riley at USC and Mel Tucker at Michigan State.
