Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen battle enchanting Ricciardo as he makes extraordinary claim

Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo has waxed lyrical over the sensational circumstances that Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton find themselves in ahead of the final Grand Prix of the season in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Both drivers go head-to-head in the United Arab Emirates on 369.5 points apiece – the first time two drivers have been level on points ahead of the final race in 47 years.

Their enthralling encounter in Sunday’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was awash with controversy as Verstappen picked up a ten-second penalty for colliding with Hamilton on lap 37.

The Mercedes driver claimed top spot and fastest lap in Jeddah to leave the duo level pegging with just one race to go.

With Hamilton having won his last three races, it had appeared that Verstappen had one hand on the trophy before the Brit’s resurgence.

But his determination and experience has led to one of the most hotly-anticipated races in F1 history, with Ricciardo understandably wowed at the manner of the occasion.

“That they go to Abu Dhabi with the same number of points is a gift to the sport,” he added.

“I’ve been hoping for that for years, although of course I’d prefer to be in the fight myself.

“We will have a real final. The veteran who can break all records versus the youngest grand prix winner ever.

“That’s a magnificent story. A dream scenario.

“I call it a battle royale. The pressure couldn’t be higher. May the best man win.”
