Lewis Hamilton escaped F1 race ban despite FIA president’s threats
That agreement only ran until the Monaco Grand Prix, though, and reports indicated that Hamilton could be banned from driving in the prestigious race at the end of May. But Hamilton did end up racing in Monte Carlo, as well as for the rest of the season, without receiving a ban. The seven-time World Champion was summoned to the stewards at last year’s Singapore Grand Prix over an alleged breach before he was later cleared.
But in March, the issue was finally resolved once and for all. Just two days before the Bahrain Grand Prix, the FIA stated that all other 19 drivers had scrutineering declaration forms processed prior to the deadline – but not Hamilton.
However, the world motorsport governing body opted to take no further action on the matter after Mercedes met with the FIA Medical Delegate. Complications arose when Hamilton attempted to remove the piece of jewellery in question, leaving the FIA with no choice but to concede defeat in their battle.
A statement read: “The Stewards consulted the FIA Medical Delegate, who viewed the medical report, examined the driver and concurred with the opinion therein. We have determined to take no further action as there are concerns about disfigurement with frequent attempts at removal of the device.”
