Lewis Hamilton eyes third straight podium with Max Verstappen on pole in Austria
Lewis Hamilton will be desperately hoping to join the battle for a podium finish at today’s Austrian Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen starts on pole, although the Brit will have plenty of work to do from fifth on the grid. He managed to show impressive pace during the latter stages of yesterday’s sprint and will be looking to build on it by achieving a top-three finish at the Red Bull Ring for the third time in as many races.
Mercedes have made no shortage of progress since revising their design philosophy over the last few weeks, with the Silver Arrows having introduced more pronounced sidepods closely resembling those of Red Bull and Aston Martin. Hamilton has been left delighted with the changes but remains adamant that further improvements can still be made to bring the German outfit back into contention for regular Grand Prix victories.
“We’ve taken a step in the right direction,” said the 38-year-old ahead of today’s race. “But I don’t think we’ve completely got to where we are going in terms of that direction. I think we’re still turning.
“We’ve got progress, real, real progress that’s coming over the next coming months, which is really exciting to see, so yeah, I can’t wait. Just in terms of being in the car, I’m starting to feel more confident in it, so finally feeling more like a race car.”
