Lewis Hamilton helping out Zhou Guanyu after ‘racist comments’

Lewis Hamilton has helped support Zhou Guanyu after the Chinese star admitted to receiving racist abuse since joining F1. The Chinese star claimed Hamilton was “very much on my side” as he revealed the seven-time champion regularly checks in on him.

He described the Mercedes star as the “leader of the drivers” who is trying to secure a “better future” for everyone in the sport. Zhou said: “I feel like what Lewis experienced in some stages, I experienced at the beginning of the year before the first race.

“So I can feel how tough he went through it. He’s been through that while he was fighting for several F1 titles.” Since 2020, Hamilton has increased his campaigning for diversity and human rights issues alongside competing in the sport.

He has regularly challenged bosses to do more for diversity, pressuring F1 chiefs into allowing drivers to take the knee ahead of races. The Mercedes star also established the Hamilton Commission in a bid to bring people from more diverse backgrounds into motorsport.

“I was experiencing last year at the same time but kind of in a different area of our career, so these things are similar. At least this year I think both of us can be showing people what we deserve. I think F1 is a big family sport, so to have everyone understanding that and to be positive about everything, is the right way to be going forward.

“Lewis is the leader of the drivers, trying to lead the sport into a better future, which has the respect of all the drivers.”
