Lewis Hamilton spotted with blood on his head after mysterious injury

Lewis Hamilton baffled onlookers on Sunday when he stepped up to the podium at the Mexican Grand Prix with a mysterious cut on his head. Theories have been flying around as to how it came about as the Brit was spotted in some discomfort before the race even began.

Hamilton was gearing up for a big afternoon in Mexico with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff making no secret of the notion that Sunday’s Grand Prix represented the team’s best chance to notch an F1 victory this season.

The seven-time world champion wound up taking second spot after an uneventful contest, in which Max Verstappen came out on top for the 14th time this year. Silver Arrows fans were invariably disappointed that the opportunity had passed them by and they received a surprise during the podium ceremony as Hamilton rocked up with a mysterious cut on his head.

There is no footage of the incident that caused the injury but F1 journalist Philip Duncan claimed to have spotted the Brit holding his head in some discomfort during the pre-race national anthem.

Furthermore, BBC’s Jennie Gow discussed Hamilton’s ‘bloodied right temple’, which she originally spotted on the grid. Gow, among others, had been told that the cut came about after an accidental collision with a cameraman.

That wasn’t the only thing to go against Hamilton in Mexico City as swarms of fans – most of them supporting Mexican native and Red Bull star Sergio Perez – booed his public appearances. It’s not the first time F1 fans have exhibited such behaviour with Verstappen on the receiving end at Silverstone earlier this year.

“I was so close [to Verstappen] I think in that first stint,” continued Hamilton. “But I think the Red Bulls were just clearly too fast today, and ultimately maybe they had the better tyre strategy.

“I’m not sure it was the right tyre at the end. I thought we should have started on the soft, but obviously we had the opposite tyre. It was okay in the first stint, but that hard tyre was just at offset, so congratulations to Max.”
