Lewis Hamilton summoned to see stewards at Saudi GP as Brit faces Max Verstappen blow

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has been summoned to see the stewards after allegedly “not respecting double waved yellow flags/lights at 17:22” during third practice for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The incident hasn’t been disclosed yet by the FIA, but it has highlighted a number of issues on the new high-speed track.

Hamilton came within inches of a crash during the third practice session ahead of qualifying at the Jeddah Street Circuit after an incident with Haas driver Nikita Mazepin.

On a cool-down lap, the seven-time world champion reached turn eight, when he was seemingly caught unaware by Mazepin, who came speeding through the first twisty part of the track.

Forced to take evasive action not to collect Hamilton with him, Mazepin cut the corner to avoid a nasty crash on track ahead of the penultimate race of the season on Sunday.

Hamilton was heard asking his team why he hadn’t been informed there was a driver behind him, admitting he had no idea he was coming up fast behind.

The Haas team were quick to radio in to the FIA race director Michael Masi asking his thoughts on the incident.

Masi replied, admitting he had concerns there were no flags on show to warn Hamilton a driver was coming up behind him: “Not great at all. I will deal with it directly with the team. I’ve also had a chat to them here because no flags of any form were shown through that sector.”
