LG Might Break Samsung’s Monopoly in iPhone 15 Displays

Samsung Display is a major player in supplying high-octane LTPO OLED panels for iPhone 15 Pro series. However, it seems like LG Display, the other giant display maker for Apple after Samsung Display, is gearing up to accommodate larger demands that it was able to meet last year.

According to a report published by The Elec, LG Display is looking after expanding its LTPO OLED panels that will be used for iPhone 15 Pro series. Last year, the display maker shipped 10 million units to Apple as it battled yield issues, which is when Apple had to turn to Samsung to supply more OLED panels last year.

Samsung Display charged a premium on units shipped above the agreed-upon terms to accommodate the demand and resources it had to allocate. With that being said, LG Display has learned a lesson and is all set to accommodate larger demand this year around.

Apple uses LTPO OLED panels for its Pro series. Both Samsung Display and LG Display are Apple’s major panel suppliers. Last year, Samsung reportedly supplied 70% of panels for iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max while LG Display supplied 10 million units in total.

The recent upgrade in demand and supply at LG can be a siren for Samsung as it can lose some share this year. As iPhone 15 series is slated to launch later this year, LG could produce more units than before thereby cutting down Samsung’s share although the figures remain unavailable.

Samsung Still Has Dominance in Apple Display Supply Chain

Samsung still has the upper hand as it will be producing display panels for both vanilla and Pro iPhone 15 series. This puts the South Korean giant in a good place although LG might still be able to leave a dent. Higher yield at LG could translate into better pricing for Apple which had to shell out more to Samsung to accommodate more units last year due to the emergency.

Apple is set to host its annual WWDC 2023 event starting June 5 where we will get to see a tonne of innovations and upgrades both in the hardware and software sphere. Apple Reality Pro could finally see the light at WWDC 2023 although the Cupertino-giant has shared any concrete details about Reality Pro or other products to be announced during the developers conference so far.
