Liam Neeson’s Retribution Gets A Gritty New Trailer
Retribution puts Liam Neeson in a car that will explode if he gets out.
That’s about the gist of this upcoming action thriller starring the aging Taken star, who at this point seems to be fully leaning into his role as the old man action hero.
A thrilling blend of Speed and Saw, Retribution pits Neeson against an unknown assailant who’s rigged his car with explosives. The ominous voice of the mysterious caller is reminiscent of Kiefer Sutherland in Phone Booth, and the effect is pretty much the same. If he exits the car, it will blow up. To make matters worse, his kids are trapped in the car with him.
It’s unclear what his captor wants with him – the film’s thrilling trailer reveals that Neeson’s Matt Turner has been set a series of tasks across the city, resulting in a high-octane race against time. The bomb under his seat turns a normal commute into a nightmarish game of cat and mouse, as his captor’s demands become increasingly dangerous.
Retribution stars Neeson in the leading role, alongside Matthew Modine, Noma Dumezweni, Jack Champion, Lilly Aspell, and Embeth Davidtz.
Sure, Retribution sounds like at least half a dozen other Liam Neeson movies, but his fans are already here for it. “It never gets old watching Liam Neeson taking down bad guys when they threaten his family,” said one YouTube comment. “He rocks. None can replace him.”
“At this point, Liam Neeson has so many different particular sets of skills when it comes to doing action movies,” said another. “I hope this man never retires from doing them even though he said he was going to.”
At this point in his career, it’s clear Neeson is the world’s unluckiest commuter, having tussled with bad guys on trains, in trucks, and now stuck in traffic during rush hour.
Retribution heads to theaters on August 25, 2023.
