Lionel Messi and four Argentina teammates avoid scary bus parade crash

Lionel Messi was nearly hit with an overhanging cable while carrying the World Cup trophy during the first of Argentina’s open-top bus parades. The World Cup champions landed in Buenos Aires in the early hours of Tuesday morning to thousands of fans waiting.

Messi stepped off the plane alongside Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni, holding the coveted World Cup trophy aloft to huge cheers. They headed straight onto an open-top bus that was waiting for them on the tarmac.

Thousands of fans had lined the streets of Ezeiza in anticipation of catching a glimpse of their heroes. And the bus was soon mobbed by fans as they entered the roads with people running in the roads to keep up with the vehicle.

Messi was seen holding onto the World Cup trophy while sat with Angel Di Maria, Nicolas Otamendi, Rodrigo De Paul and Leandro Paredes. The five players were all sat on top of the bus and they quickly had to make an evasive manoeuvre to avoid being hit by an overhanging cable.

While the bus was turning and all five players were waving to the baying crown, they suddenly spotted they were set to hit a cable. All five ducked with Messi protecting the trophy while Paredes, who was sat perilously on the edge, lost his hat as the cable brushed his head.

They were able to laugh off the incident, but the moment could have easily ended in tears had they not noticed the wires. There was soon a sea of people surrounding the bus as it made its way into the city centre.
