Lionel Messi’s first words to Inter Miami fans as shirt number confirmed
Shortly following the announcement, Inter Miami co-owner and soccer legend David Beckham was quick to post on social media and welcome Messi. “The next chapter of our story starts here,” the post reads.
“Ten years ago when I started this journey, I dreamt of bringing the greatest players in the world to Miami… Players who shared the ambition I had when I joined LA Galaxy to help grow football in this country and build a legacy in this sport that we love so much.
“Today that dream came true. I couldn’t be prouder that a player of Leo’s calibre is joining our club but I’m also delighted to welcome a friend, an amazing person and his beautiful family to join our @InterMiamiCF community. @leomessi #FreedomToDream”
Messi is set to make his MLS debut on Friday, July 21 when Inter Miami face Mexican team Cruz Azul at DRV PNK Stadium for the League’s Cup opener.
The World Cup winner’s move comes after deciding to part ways with PSG following a turbulent spell. Although he did win two league titles. The move was the 36-year-old’s second professional team after almost two decades at Barcelona.
During his time in Spain, Messi managed to cement himself as one of the greatest soccer players the world has seen. Seven Ballon d’Ors, four Champions League trophies and ten LaLiga titles are among his many achievements.
Recently Messi added to his triumphs and lifted the World Cup with Argentina in Qatar. The Argentine’s latest challenge has seen him follow in the footsteps of such players as Pele, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in making the move stateside.
