Lisandro Martinez left Bellingham raging before winning Real ace back over
Bellingham fired the La Liga giants into an early lead, beating Andre Onana with a delightful chip to continue making an early impression after his £115million arrival.
And he threatened on the ball throughout the first half as Carlo Ancelotti’s primary outlet to transition from defence to attack.
But Martinez, who made headlines for his rough tackling in United’s 2-0 win against Arsenal last time out, didn’t hold back again as half-time loomed.
The Argentine centre-back was booked for a crunching challenge on Bellingham in the 42nd minute, prompting a furious reaction that leaked into the break.
But Bellingham has revealed his half-time fury quickly became respect after Martinez embraced him on the bench after being substituted after the hour mark.
“The little tiff with Martinez is one of those things. He’s a brilliant player. I came in at half-time, and I was ‘f’ing this and f’ing that’,” Bellingham explained.
“But when he came over to wish me all the best when he came off, I really respected it. I know what goes on the pitch stays on the pitch. I saw him at the end of the game and wished him well.
“I can respect that when two players are trying to win for their team and can come together and be respectful after the game.
“He’s a great competitor and a great player. Just like me, he wants to win. Sometimes it spills over.
“That is part of the game. But I’m really respectful. We can have that moment after the game.”
Erik ten Hag has paired Martinez and Raphael Varane throughout pre-season, reuniting the successful partnership in his maiden season at Old Trafford.
And the former showed his class by making peace with Bellingham, who is also primed for a big campaign after joining Real from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
