Little known Malaysia bowler becomes the first male cricketer to take seven wickets in a T20I | Cricket News – Times of India
The 32-year-old Syazrul Idrus, who had previously played in 22 T20Is, delivered an outstanding performance, breaking the previous record held by Nigerian Peter Aho for the best bowling figures in a men’s T20I. Aho’s record of 6 for 5 was surpassed by Idrus’ impressive haul (7/8), all of which were bowled dismissals.
Among full members of the ICC, India’s Deepak Chahar holds the record for the best bowling figures in a T20I, claiming 6 for 7 against Bangladesh in 2019. This performance is the joint-third best overall, alongside Dinesh Nakrani, who achieved the same figures for Uganda against Lesotho in 2021.
Frederique Overdijk of the Netherlands currently holds the best bowling figures in a T20I, both for male and female players, with an extraordinary 7 for 3 against France in 2021.
Prior to Idrus’ exceptional feat, a total of 12 bowlers had recorded six-wicket hauls in men’s T20Is, including notable players like India’s Yuzvendra Chahal and Deepak Chahar, Australia’s spinner Ashton Agar, and Sri Lanka’s tweaker Ajantha Mendis. However, none had achieved the elusive seven-wicket haul until Idrus’ incredible performance.
In the match against China, electing to bat first, the Chinese team struggled significantly and were bowled out for a mere 23 runs in 11.2 overs. None of their batters managed to score double digit runs, with Idrus single-handedly tearing through their batting line-up. Opener Wei Guo Lei was the top scorer with just 7, while six Chinese batters were dismissed for nought.
Chasing the low target, Malaysia comfortably reached 24 for 2 in just 4.5 overs, securing a convincing victory.
The winner of the T20 World Cup Asia B Qualifier will progress to the Asia Regional Final in Nepal in November, with the two leading teams from that event qualifying for the T20 World Cup in 2024.
