Liverpool ‘agent talks’ hint at Trent Alexander-Arnold plan with Chelsea in race
Liverpool have reportedly held talks with the agents of Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard which could suggest the Reds are in the market for a new right-back this summer. The decision is likely to be linked to the transformation of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has recently been thriving in a central midfield role for both club and country.
Alexander-Arnold caught the eye during the recent international break for the Three Lions – netting a scorcher against Malta before laying on a sumptuous assist for Bukayo Saka in the 7-0 demolition of North Macedonia.
And it now looks like Liverpool are making plans to provide additional cover as they prepare to continue utilising Alexander-Arnold centrally.
According to Bild, the Reds have sounded out Pavard as a possible summer recruit with the Bayern man expected to embark on a new challenge this summer.
Reporter Christian Falk told Caught Offisde: “Liverpool and Pavard. They talked with the agents but have never been concrete with the club and that’s also the positions of the other clubs.
“There aren’t many clubs which are of interest to Pavard. There was and is Barca, there’s Liverpool, Chelsea, then if City are on the table, City too.”
It looks as though Liverpool could have strong competition though from rivals Chelsea and Manchester City as they are both looking to improve their defence this summer.
Liverpool recently loaned out youngster Calvin Ramsay to Preston which would also suggest they are looking to bolster their options at right-back.
In the past, James Milner has slotted in with ease as a deputy option but the veteran has now joined Brighton on a free transfer.
In the past few days, Kyle Walker has been linked with a shock move to Anfield.
But that does not currently look viable as Bayern Munich are the clear frontrunners if he is to depart the Etihad Stadium with talks over a new contract said to be ongoing.
Ex-Liverpool winger John Barnes does not believe a transfer for Walker is realistic.
He told Betting Expert: “Kyle Walker would be good but Kyle Walker isn’t coming [when asked about RBs who would fit Liverpool’s style]. Of course there are right-backs who would be good for Liverpool. Kieran Trippier is another one.”
“But I don’t see any in the Premier League who Liverpool can get. I don’t think they’re looking for a right-back anyway, they’re looking for midfield players.”
Liverpool are also expected to hand Alexander-Arnold a new contract in the coming months following his exceptional end to the season.
Jurgen Klopp is now building his side around the 24-year-old and could permanently switch to a back-three long-term.
The Reds are currently prioritising midfield reinforcements at this moment in time but they could also make tweaks to their backline.
