Liverpool boss Klopp makes transfer declaration ahead of summer window

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he is taking inspiration from Arsenal and how they conducted their transfer business previously ahead of the summer window. The German boss is hoping to orchestrate a reshuffle at Anfield at the end of the season but has stressed that the decisions made must be ‘smart’.

The Reds boss have paid the price for their lack of investment this season, with their squad lacking star quality and appearing short of true squad depth.

Several fringe players are expected to depart when the campaign concludes, including Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner, and work is already going on behind the scenes to shortlist replacements and ready offers.

Klopp has made it no secret that he is hoping to welcome some fresh faces to his dressing room over the summer, though how necessary the rebuild has become has come as a surprise to him. Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Arsenal on Sunday, the former Borussia Dortmund boss said: “You get in this whirlwind and it sucks you in that direction. And all of a sudden it’s like “wow, where are we?

“What I know is that we have to go through this. That’s it, that’s what I know. And then there will be a new start naturally because it’s a new season, a new start 100 percent.

“Then we will see what changes we make, but until then we have to go through this. And that’s a super challenge, a massive challenge obviously in this [modern] world. It was not easy 20 years ago and now it is close to impossible.”

Table-topping Arsenal have led the way in terms of showing ‘Big Six’ clubs how to rebuild without completely overhauling the squad, and Klopp is hoping that Liverpool can replicate their rivals’ style of concise recruitment. He continued: “Arsenal deserves where they are (top of the table). I know people are asking for time for managers but I really think Mikel deserved each minute he got there when it was not going incredibly well.

“Good transfers, brought in super important players but not too many. The difference is whatever we do next year will never be enough from people’s point of view and your point of view. But yes with smart recruitment we will improve – definitely. That is the plan. And I think this club has a chance to go through this in a classy way. We cannot make 24 changes and say ‘here we go’- not even 10 – but it is just that we have to make changes – smart changes – and then we go again.”
