Liverpool can land ideal Fabinho replacement Luis with £103m release clause
With Fabinho being heavily linked with moves to Saudi Arabia, Liverpool’s rebuild could be set to make reach an even more significant level. The Reds must acquire the services of at least one top-quality holding midfielder in order to replace the ex-Monaco star – as well as potentially Jordan Henderson – and they could be tempted to return to Benfica in the hope of signing Florentino Luis.
Jurgen Klopp made it clear prior to the transfer window opening that he needed to reshuffle his ranks over the summer, allowing Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all to depart to create space in his squad.
Liverpool welcomed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to their ranks as a result, though it appears that a further two signings in that department may be required. Romeo Lavia and Joao Palhinha are among a plethora of names to have been linked to Anfield, but Liverpool could lean on their relationship with Benfica to acquire another top talent.
Luis has suitors from across Europe following his impressive season in Liga Portugal, with his defensive strength allowing his attacking teammates to flourish on their way to the league title. Given that Benfica parted ways with Enzo Fernandez in January, they certainly will not want to lost another midfielder so soon.
However, if Liverpool identify the 23-year-old as the ideal candidate to fill their midfield void then they may be forced to take a closer look at Luis’ £103million release clause. The sales of Fabinho and Henderson are expected to raise at least £50m in funds, which would be a significant boost to the club’s transfer budget over the coming weeks as they consider investment.
The Reds also negotiated a quick-fire deal for Darwin Nunez last summer in what proved a piece of business that benefitted all parties, and making use of that relationship with Benfica could prompt the Portuguese side to lower their asking price for their midfielder.
