Liverpool chief Michael Edwards could repeat Thiago Alcantara transfer trick with £25m buy

Liverpool director Michael Edwards could be given a clear pathway to the signature of Bayern Munich contract rebel Kingsley Coman ahead of next season, according to reports. The Reds are no strangers to doing business with the German heavyweights, splashing just shy of £25million to land Thiago Alcantara at the start of last season.

The Spanish midfielder struggled at times during his first year on Merseyside but has shown flashes of quality throughout his time in the Premier League.

Thiago has featured more prominently this time around in the absence of Georginio Wijnaldum, along with Curtis Jones and Naby Keita.

It seems as though Liverpool could be tempted into approaching Bayern for the services of Coman to reunite him with Thiago at Anfield next summer.

The former will be out of contract in 2023 and is yet to sign a new deal at the Allianz Arena, with little to no progress being made despite lengthy talks over the possibility of fresh terms.

Bayern are keen to retain the 25-year-old but have made it clear that they will not be held to ransom in negotiations, with the player reportedly demanding a hefty wage increase.

Liverpool have admired Coman from a distance for some time, but could soon be poised to bring him to Anfield should they decide to act on their interest in his services.

Bayern would be prepared to sell the Frenchman at the end of the season in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer a year later, according to AS.

The Bavarian giants are said to have already identified Red Bull Salzburg marksman Karim Adeyemi and Antony of Ajax as two potential replacements for Coman in the event he leaves the club next summer.

However, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool would be successful with another £25m bid in what would be a carbon copy of their previous move for Thiago.

Bayern legend Christian Nerlinger recently declared that his former employers are likely to cash in on Coman next summer but warned the Reds that he will only be sold for the right price.

“Bayern have a team of the highest quality [but] they have a tendency to lose players for free,” Nerlinger told Bild.

“But you can’t do that in the long run, you have to separate yourself from players if the offer is right.

“Coman is an excellent player but, given the overall situation, I think Bayern will consider selling him.”

Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in Coman, but their recent acquisition of Jadon Sancho may have ended their quest to strengthen in the wide positions.

Meanwhile, the Bayern winger himself recently insisted that he is relaxed about his future, but declared that he will be keeping a close eye on his options over the coming months.

“I can stay here for a few more years and see how things are elsewhere,” Coman told Eurosport. “So it’s something in between.”
