Liverpool have four enticing shirt numbers for Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo has agreed to sign for Liverpool in January and he could be set for a prominent role in Jurgen Klopp’s side with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota both out injured. Most of the coveted shirt numbers are occupied at Anfield but four stick out as prime candidates for the Dutchman, including the one vacated by Sadio Mane.

Number 10

Liverpool never directly replaced Mane when he departed for Bayern Munich during the summer. Conveniently for Gakpo, that has left the coveted No 10 jersey up for grabs on Merseyside and landing it could signal his importance to the team going forward.

While Mane left as a Reds legend, he wasn’t the only club hero to have donned the No 10 as Michael Owen, Jan Molby and John Barnes all enjoyed spells with the shirt.

Number 18

Still vacant following Takumi Minamino’s summer departure to Monaco, Gakpo could land himself a number worn by a series of respected Liverpool stars. Although never worn by himself, the No 18 has previously been sported in Liverpool red by the likes of John Arne Riise, Dirk Kuyt and, for a time, Michael Owen.

Reds fans shouldn’t have long to wait to find out Gakpo’s shirt number fate with the Netherlands striker poised to be unveiled early in the January transfer window after the agreement of an initial £37million deal between PSV and Liverpool.
