Liverpool have ‘one more day’ to trigger £61m clause and get deal done for Klopp
Liverpool don’t have long left to trigger the release clause of RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. It is claimed the £61million clause in the star’s contract expires on Friday.
Liverpool are still hoping to add more midfielders to their squad this summer. Alexis Mac Allister was one of the first major signings completed by a Premier League club.
The Argentine joined from Brighton for an initial £35million. But the departures of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have left Jurgen Klopp short of midfield options.
Captain Jordan Henderson and Thiago are also both the wrong side of 30. Klopp is in the market for fresh legs and Szoboszlai has emerged as a target.
However, there isn’t long left to pay his release clause. Fabrizio Romano claims it expires at the end of the month, which is just a day away.
Liverpool could attempt to sign Szoboszlai for a smaller fee after the clause expires. However, there would also be the potential of Leipzig demanding more than £61m as they have already lost a top player this summer, with Christopher Nkunku leaving for Chelsea.
Szoboszlai joined Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2021 after being linked with the likes of Arsenal. The Hungary international has made 91 appearances in all competitions for the German side, registering an impressive 20 goals and 22 assists in that time.
Liverpool are already set to do some business with Leipzig in this window. Fabio Carvalho is to complete a loan move to the Bundesliga outfit after struggling for game time in his first season at Anfield.
The agreement over Carvalho’s loan could help Liverpool’s cause in any attempt to sign Szoboszlai. The Athletic claimed earlier this week that Liverpool had held talks with the player’s representatives regarding a potential summer move.
Other midfielders Liverpool are interested in include Khephren Thuram and Romeo Lavia. Thuram is currently with the France under-21 squad at the ongoing European Championships in Romania and Georgia.
Lavia was relegated with Southampton last season so could look to force a move away from St Mary’s. However, both Arsenal and Chelsea are also credited with an interest in the former Manchester City youngster.
Arsenal are close to signing a midfielder of their own, with a £105m move for Declan Rice on the verge of being tied up. Chelsea have prioritised departures in recent weeks but are hoping to sign Brighton star Moises Caicedo.
