Liverpool in good position to sign free Van Dijk partner in Ndicka
Liverpool may have a strong chance of signing potential free agent Evan Ndicka this summer, who could be a future Virgil van Dijk partner at the back. The Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back has attracted the attention of several top clubs in the Premier League and across Europe with his impressive displays in the Bundesliga, as he looks set to be on the move on at the end of the season.
The 23-year-old has already reportedly communicated to the club that he will not extend his contract which expires at the end of the season, prompting interest from several teams including Liverpool and Barcelona. The Reds may be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements as the likes of Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have all failed to nail down a regular place alongside Van Dijk while Klopp’s outfit have been prone to blunders at the back.
Ndicka may be viewed as a cut-price option to improve the defence, as funds could be scarce if Liverpool miss out on next season’s Champions League and intend to overhaul their midfield with several incoming transfers. If the Reds do move for the Frenchman, they can do so without having to worry about one rival joining them in the pursuit.
Mundo Deportivo claim that Barcelona do not intend to get into a transfer battle with Liverpool who have put themselves in a strong position to land Ndicka, despite having previously scouted the defender and are hoping to land a left-footed centre-back in the summer. They will continue to monitor his situation but do not want to get into competition with the other teams interested in his signature.
The likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan have all been credited with an interest in Ndicka, however, as it would be unlikely that Liverpool get a free run at the Bosman signing.
A free transfer while selling on one of the current centre-backs could help put funds elsewhere, as Jamie Carragher recently told Klopp that another right-back is needed to provide competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold, while their woes in midfield have been well-documented and several summer arrivals are expected.
“That [defending vs Real Madrid] can’t continue, what’s happened this season with him and the number of times he has been lacking defensively,” Carragher told CBS Sports. “The problem they have got in that position is that they’ve never had real competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“One of the reasons why is because he has been so good and you think ‘Who do you buy and how much do you spend for someone who is not really going to play every week?’
“Liverpool are at the point where they have got to go and buy a right-back. It’s Jurgen Klopp decision in terms of how good that right-back is and how much he costs, but that lad needs serious competition.”
