Liverpool ‘likely’ to miss out on ‘carbon copy of Gerrard’ Bellingham

Liverpool have been warned Manchester City is a more likely destination for Jude Bellingham than Anfield. The England midfielder, who shone at the World Cup in a 6-2 win over Iran, is a top target for the Reds ahead of the summer transfer window.

But Bellingham is one of the most highly sought-after prospects in Europe. Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid are all alternative potential suitors for the teenage sensation, who doesn’t turn 20 until June.

The former Birmingham prospect has already amassed 19 England caps and over 100 Borussia Dortmund appearances. It is expected he will command a fee north of £100million in the summer. And Teddy Sheringham has labelled Bellingham a ‘carbon copy’ of iconic former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Bellingham has admitted on several occasions that the Reds’ former No 8 was his childhood hero. However ex-Tottenham and Manchester United striker Sheringham expects the player to end up at the Etihad. He told BoyleSports Football: “Jude Bellingham was so impressive against Iran in every department. If Kalvin Phillips had been playing there’s no way he’d have scored the first goal.

“Phillips would have been 25 yards back and watching the play unfold. Bellingham had been told to get forward and obviously had the legs to get back. He would be a brilliant signing for any ‘big six’ Premier League club. He’s not a carbon copy of Steven Gerrard but they’re similar in the fact they both drive forward from deep.

“In terms of which club he suits, Man United will want him but City and Liverpool are way ahead of them at the moment. [A move to] City looks the most likely, particularly as Pep Guardiola is staying for another two years.”

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his official YouTube channel, has revealed Liverpool are among a clutch of clubs currently in contact with Bellingham’s representatives over a move. He said: “It will be almost impossible to keep the player in the summer. He’s doing fantastic with England and for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, in the Bundesliga and in the World Cup.

“Bellingham is great everywhere. He’s an amazing player and this is why Borussia Dortmund didn’t want to decide any price before or during the World Cup. The price will be decided after the World Cup and negotiations will happen in 2023.

“Many clubs have had discussions with people close to Bellingham but not yet with Dortmund. These clubs are, for sure Liverpool, they want Bellingham at all costs, Real Madrid are also interested and have had some contacts.

“Manchester City, he’s big friends with Erling Haaland and City will probably go for a midfielder in the summer. Keep an eye on Chelsea because Bellingham and Frenkie de Jong are two players that remain on Chelsea’s list.”
