Liverpool may be repeating Van Dijk transfer tactic with Bellingham
Reports have circulated that Liverpool have pulled the plug on their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, though history proves that everything may not be what it seems at Anfield. The Reds are long-term admirers of Bellingham, though it has been speculated that other targets have become a priority now.
Liverpool’s rollercoaster of a campaign has highlighted how significant of a rebuild the club needs. Jurgen Klopp’s side have shown glimmers of quality, though lacked the consistency to ever truly be considered title contenders this season – with finishing in the European places now a realistic target in Merseyside.
Lack of squad depth and ageing stars has largely been blamed for the Reds’ disappointments, and the club plan to address major issues when the campaign concludes. Klopp is keen to address his shortage of quality in midfield over the summer, with several stars being cited as targets.
Bellingham was formerly cited as a top target of Liverpool, though reports earlier this week have emerged to state that the club are not willing to fork out over £130million for his services. Klopp’s side instead would rather split their transfer budget between signing two or three players, rather than committing all funds to Bellingham.
The news has led to significant disappointment among Reds supporters, desperate for their owners to bring in a marquee signing and acquire one of Europe’s biggest talents. However, they may not be entirely out of the race to sign Bellingham despite what is splashed across the back pages.
Previously, it was reported that the club had ended their interest in Alisson when he was a Roma goalkeeper, before signing him months later.
Similarly, Liverpool even went to the effort of a public statement to reveal that they had ended their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk, who was at Southampton at the time. It read: “Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs.
“We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk. We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.” However, regardless of Southampton not wanting to sell, the Dutch defender was a Liverpool player just six months later. Therefore, it would be no great surprise if the Reds were still firmly in the race to sign Bellingham despite the stories considering that they are no stranger to biding their time with pursuits.
