Liverpool owners FSG have £61.2m route to kickstart January window

Liverpool will already have one eye on the January transfer market with FSG facing increased scrutiny from this past summer’s activity and selling three players along with their Champions League prize money could see the club raise as much as £61.2million. The Reds spent big on replacing Sadio Mane in the summer for Darwin Nunez while Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay were signed as part of the club’s future.

Jurgen Klopp initially batted away any suggestion the club needed to bring in a midfielder during the window, but injuries to Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain soon questioned the Liverpool boss’ stance. Liverpool fans have taken aim at the club’s owners for not backing the manager further by going after a central midfielder in a summer where the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea all spent big.

There’s long been talk of Liverpool planning to make a move for Jude Bellingham next summer, which will likely require a club-record bid in excess of £100m. But the battle is already on for Liverpool to secure Champions League football for next year as they currently sit ninth in the table.

There are just four league games between now and the January transfer window opening and Liverpool have proven that they’re willing to dip into the market if the right deal becomes available. Luis Diaz was signed this past January and made an immediate impact at Anfield while Virgil van Dijk joined the Reds in the middle of the season back in 2018.

Due to their qualification to the Champions League last-16, Liverpool have already secured £8.2m in prize money with an extra £12m for the five wins they picked up in the group. But the January transfer window may also be an opportunity to offload a few fringe players to help raise those funds even further.

While both Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain are out of contract at the end of the season, both could still fetch a healthy transfer fee in the New Year. According to transfermarkt, Oxlade-Chamberlain is valued at £11.7m while Keita is said to be worth £22.5m.

Nathaniel Phillips may also help raise some funds for Liverpool with the central defender seemingly out of the picture at Anfield as he’s valued at £7.2m.

If Liverpool are able to sell those three along with the Champions League prize money, that would see them have £61.2m for the January transfer window. Waiting for Bellingham may prove to be a risk for FSG with other clubs in the running for the England international’s signature.

At least one midfielder will be the priority and Liverpool have been linked with several targets such as Konrad Laimer, Jamal Musiala and Florian Neuhaus. And given Liverpool’s perilous position in the Premier League table currently, the squad may be in need of a boost in the January window.
