Liverpool target Colwill grew up with ‘posters of Steven Gerrard’ in his bedroom
Liverpool transfer target Levi Colwill idolised Steven Gerrard so much that he had pictures of the Reds icon on his bedroom wall. The defender has been linked with a move to Anfield amid his uncertain Chelsea future.
Reports claim that Colwill is due for talks with new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino once he returns from England duty at the U21 European Championship. He will seek clarity over his role within the Argentine’s plans and apparently does not want to act as back-up.
It has been suggested that the 20-year-old could consider his future if he is not granted those assurances. Liverpool have been mooted as a possible destination for the former Brighton and Huddersfield loanee.
Colwill might jump at the chance to join Jurgen Klopp’s side after an interview in which the centre-back gushed about legendary midfielder Gerrard resurfaced. He claimed to have copied everything the former Liverpool captain did and had posters of him on his wall.
“Growing up [my idol] was always Steven Gerrard, I would be watching him, he’s a leader. I was just amazed by him, I used to have pictures of him in my room,” Colwill told Goal in 2021.
“I was always trying to copy him before I was playing football. I always dressed up as him, I had the same boots. That was it.
“I just looked up to him. Obviously, I wasn’t really ever a central midfielder, but I always tried to have the same mentality as him. It just went from there.”
According to the Evening Standard, Colwill will discuss his future with Pochettino later this month. The Chelsea academy graduate is shining for England U21s at the European Championship in Georgia and will return to learn what his future holds.
Colwill will return to Chelsea to find several first-team stars competing for the centre-back positions. It remains unclear if Pochettino plans to play a back four or a back three, leaving Colwill guessing whether he will have a strong chance of regular action.
The likes of Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah will all expect to start for Chelsea next season. Colwill will therefore have a tough job in his attempts to be a frequent starter at Stamford Bridge.
Pochettino might have been keeping a close eye on the youngster during his impressive spell at Brighton last term. Having initially struggled to break into Roberto De Zerbi’s side, Colwill played in 10 of the final 14 Premier League games, helping the Seagulls qualify for the Europa League.
