Liverpool’s transfer decision on Paul Pogba can cause double trouble for Man Utd

Liverpool can cause Manchester United some serious problems going into the transfer window. It comes amid news that the Reds are looking to seize on Paul Pogba’s contract trouble at Old Trafford.

Liverpool are open to signing Pogba on a free transfer next summer when his contract expires.

After rejecting the latest offer from United, the Frenchman looks set to leave the club but whether he will do so this year or next remains to be seen.

For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the preferred outcome would be the midfielder penning a new deal with the Red Devils.

But failing that, selling him this summer would be for the best or risk losing the 28-year-old for nothing next summer.

However, Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola would prefer that his client does exactly that so that they can decide where best to go next with a number of options opening up.

As it stands, only Paris Saint-Germain are interested in a deal this summer while the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus would enter the race next year.

Another surprise candidate is Liverpool – who are looking to improve their midfield with Georginio Wijnaldum gone and Jordan Henderson’s future in the air.

If the Reds can land Pogba on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, that would be a huge blow for United.

Not only does Solskjaer lose one of the most talented players he has for nothing, Pogba would strengthen Liverpool massively in a department many have cried out for more creativity.

Fitting into Jurgen Klopp’s high-energy system might be a bit of a tough adaptation from his usual role.

But on the other hand, the busy players surrounding Pogba could allow the Frenchman to concentrate on his best assets causing damage further up the field.

For United, watching one of their truly world-class players – albeit not seen enough at Old Trafford – leave for one of their biggest rivals would be humiliating.

His reputation with the fans would likely be tarnished while the Red Devils fail to see a penny back on the £89m – a world record at the time – they splashed out in 2016.

What would make matters worse would be if Pogba was a huge success at Anfield and the pain watching him lift a trophy in the Merseyside shade of red would be borderline unbearable.

Not many players have made the trip along the M62 from Manchester to Liverpool, in fact the last move between the clubs directly went ahead in 1964.

But Pogba has always done things his way and the Reds would greedily take in a player that would scorn their arch-rivals so much.
