Logan Director Doesn’t Sound Thrilled Wolverine Is in Deadpool 3

It turns out there’s at least one person who wishes Wolverine wasn’t in Deadpool 3.

During an interview with Variety, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold revealed his thoughts on Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool sequel.

“I can’t say that there’s a part of me that doesn’t wish that we’d let it be,” he said. “But there was always going to be another Wolverine. There could be a baby Wolverine and a cartoon Wolverine. As much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they’re going to try to.”

Mangold famously brought Wolverine’s story to an agonizing close in Logan, the big-screen adaptation of the popular comic book run, Old Man Logan.

However, while many fans feel the film is the perfect endpoint for the character, Jackman was convinced to pick up his adamantium claws once more for Deadpool 3. Still, Mangold thinks Logan is still the perfect endpoint for his story.

“I don’t measure my success on a movie like Logan with whether we ended the conversation,” he explained. “I ended my conversation.”

It’s still unclear how Wolverine will return in the Deadpool sequel, and the character is said to be “something completely new” compared to Jackman’s previous X-Men films.

“I think he was ready,” said Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds. “I think he was excited. What we pitched him was enough of a divergence from the character that he knows and the character that he’s left behind that it gives him something completely new to play and something that he’s really excited to do.”

IGN’s Logan review gave it 9.7/10 and said: “Logan is in many ways an emotional, heavy picture, but it’s also an uplifting one that reminds us that it’s okay to fight for something more, something better. It’s an amazing swan song for the Wolverine character, and for Jackman, and perhaps the best X-Men movie yet.”
