Lord of the Rings Franchise to Expand With Five New Games Releasing in the Next Two Years

The Lord of the Rings will see some major expansion in the form of video games in the next few months, with plans of up to five games releasing soon.

The announcement comes from a financial earnings report from the Sweden-based Embracer Group, which owns the rights to the J. R. R. Tolkien-created franchise. The report confirms that the company will release five games based around the franchise in the next two years.

“There are currently five games in production by external partners, to be released in financial year 2023/24.”

So far, we know about four of the five projects in development at Embracer Group’s external partners. This includes The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, an action-adventure game from the developers at Daedalic Entertainment. At the moment, the game has been pushed from its September 1, 2022 release date.

There’s also The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, which is a survival crafting video game set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth.

While EA is working on a free-to-play mobile title called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, Weta Workshop is also working on an untitled game with Take-Two. It will be interesting to see what the next few months offer, as fans will be keen to know more about the unknown fifth title, and we sure can’t wait to see how the franchise shapes up in the future.
