This year’s first lunar eclipse is set to occur on Friday, May 5 2023. It will be a penumbral eclipse that will start around 8:44 PM IST and will be visible from India if the sky turns out to be clear. In some places, the entire lunar eclipse will be visible, whereas in other parts, the Moon will rise or set during the lunar eclipse.

The lunar eclipse will begin on May 5, 2023, at around 8.44 pm IST and will reach its maximum at 10.52 pm. The penumbral eclipse will end at 1.01 am on May 6, 2023. If the weather is good and the sky is clear, the entire eclipse will be visible from India. Some of the regions that would be able to witness some parts of the lunar eclipse are– Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and Antarctica.

During a penumbral eclipse, the moon passes deep into the outer part of Earth’s shadow, known as a penumbra.

Sky gazers residing in India will be able to watch the lunar eclipse on May 5 after 8:44 PM. As stated earlier, if the sky is clear, then the eclipse can also be watched with the naked eye. Those looking to enhance their experience of watching a lunar eclipse can use binoculars or a telescope.
Unlike a solar eclipse, (which cannot be looked at with the naked eye) lunar eclipse is safe to look at directly without using any eye protection. In case you are using a binocular or a telescope, make sure to use appropriate solar filters to protect your eyes.
Citizens can also live stream the lunar eclipse on May 5 via several YouTube channels.
