Mac Allister agreement, overtake Man Utd – Liverpool’s dream end to the season
Liverpool have three crucial fixtures remaining before the Premier League season comes to a close with the fight for Champions League qualification still on. Express Sport takes a look at what Liverpool will be hoping for over the final few weeks of the campaign.
Overtake Man Utd
Starting with the biggest dream of all for any Liverpool fan heading into the final few fixtures. It was just a few weeks ago where Liverpool finishing above Manchester United seemed an impossible scenario.
But United’s loss to West Ham at the weekend has seen Liverpool close to within just one point of Erik ten Hag’s side. They do have a game in hand on Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s side are in excellent form while United have lost back-to-back league games.
Liverpool still need to beat Leicester, Aston Villa and Southampton in order to give themselves a chance, but they will fancy their chances on current form.
Dream Firmino farewell
The final home game of the season for Liverpool against Aston Villa on May 20 will surely be an emotional occasion. Several players are set to wave goodbye to Anfield such as Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Milner has been an exceptional servant for Liverpool since his move from Manchester City back in 2015, but arguably no player has become as big a fan favourite as Roberto Firmino during Klopp’s reign in charge. The Brazilian was the glue that held everything together for Liverpool’s potent attacking unit for several years.
His magic touch on the ball and link up play saw him adored by the Anfield faithful and he’ll be wanting a magical farewell. He faces a race to prove his fitness, but Liverpool fans will want one more glimpse of Firmino on the pitch at Anfield before he departs.
Everton not relegated
It may be a fun idea for Liverpool fans to see their arch rivals suffer an embarrassing relegation. But there will also be a sense of disappointment that the longest-running top-flight derby in England would come to an end.
There would be a void on Liverpool’s fixture list from next season if Everton were no longer taking up two spots. The days of Everton and Liverpool battling for league position are still very far away and the Reds have dominated the Merseyside derby for decades now.
But the games always provide an extra bit of spice and only add to the excitement of the Premier League. Not having that next year would ultimately be bad news for the Reds.
Mac Allister agreement
The summer transfer window is set to be one of Klopp’s most important in charge of the club. Jude Bellingham appears out of reach now with Real Madrid closing in, but Liverpool look set to test Brighton’s resolve for Alexis Mac Allister.
Reports have suggested that Liverpool are moving quickly in trying to snap Mac Allister up as soon as the transfer window opens. An agreement in principle could feasibly be reached in what would be a huge boost heading into the summer transfer window.
It would also alleviate any immediate pressure Liverpool face on the important transfer window.
