Man City boss Pep Guardiola signs new £20m-a-year contract until 2025

Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year contract extension worth £20million a season that will keep him at Manchester City until the summer of 2025. And Guardiola says he is ready to lay the foundations for an “amazing decade” for City after committing his future to the club.

The ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has been at City since 2016, winning 11 trophies, and has agreed to an extra two seasons at the Etihad as he looks to deliver even more success. Guardiola’s existing deal was due to expire at the end of the current season but the 51-year-old is going nowhere.

Guardiola has won four Premier League titles since arriving at City in 2016. And he insisted the club could be on the cusp of a golden period while admitting he could not resist being a part of it.

“I know the next chapter of this club will be amazing for the next decade. It happened over the last ten years, and it will happen in the next 10 years because this club is so stable,” he said. “From day one I felt something special being here. I cannot be in a better place.

“I still have the feeling there is more we can achieve together and that is why I want to stay and continue fighting for trophies.” Guardiola met with City owner Sheikh Mansour in Abu Dhabi and has put pen to paper on a contract worth over £20m a year. The arrangement replicates the structure of the deal he signed in November 2020 with a 12 months extension and the option of a further year on top.

Guardiola’s renewed commitment is a boost for the club as they seek to hit the ground running in the second half of this season following the World Cup. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak expressed his delight that they had persuaded Guardiola to continue his work in Manchester.

“He has already contributed so much to the success and fabric of this organisation, and it’s exciting to think what might be possible given the energy, hunger and ambition that he clearly still has,” he said.

“Under his very special leadership our first team has accomplished so much, whilst continuously playing, and constantly evolving, a City style of football that is admired the world over.” Al Mubarak added: “Like every City fan, I am looking forward to what lies ahead.”

City sit five points behind league leaders Arsenal in second place after 14 games of the Premier League season. They have also qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League where they will take on RB Leipzig in the last 16.

And Guardiola, fresh from signing his new deal, warned the likes of Premier League table-toppers Arsenal and long-time rivals Liverpool that City have unfinished business under him. The Catalan coach said: “I have everything I need to do my job best as possible. I have the support.  We discuss a lot what we can do better. We have to do better. I love my job and I have everything to do it. I cannot be in a better place now.

“The moment I don’t feel that, for family reasons, or I have achieved everything I want to achieve, or I don’t feel comfortable with the team, or it’s not a pleasure to fight for another Premier League, when these feelings disappear, I will step aside.”
