Man City player ratings as seven stars get 8 or higher as Real Madrid blown away

Manchester City moved one step closer to an illustrious treble by hammering Real Madrid with a sensational performance which booked their spot in the Champions League final on Wednesday night. City will head to Istanbul next month to try to win their first European Cup against Inter Milan after Julian Alvarez, an Eder Militao own goal and Bernardo Silva’s brace gave them a 4-0 win at the Etihad. Express Sport rates and slates the individual performances from both sets of players on an incredible night for City…

Man City

Ederson – 7

Great second-half save from David Alaba’s free-kick. Got a fingertip to one Toni Kroos drive that he tipped on to the bar and also stood strong late on too to protect clean sheet.

Kyle Walker – 8

Outstanding performance in wrapping up the lethal Vinicius Jr with a combination of nous and raw pace.

Ruben Dias – 8

Authoritative at the heart of the City defence. Fearless in pressing high up the pitch to stop Madrid at source.

Manuel Akanji – 8

Has adapted so well to his left-back duties. Solid defensively and strong running with the ball.

John Stones – 8

Revelling in new role handed to him by Pep Guardiola and used the space well again.

Rodri – 8

The centre-piece to the City system, linking the defence and attack. A long way from just a holding midfielder.

Ilkay Gundogan – 7

Tidy leader of the City midfield who kept their engine running smoothly. Booked for foul on Vinicius Jr.

Jack Grealish – 8

Went at Madrid from the start with the confidence of a player that now knows he belongs. Won free-kick after free-kick.

Kevin de Bruyne – 6

Found the holes in the right-hand side of the Madrid defence down the right with his intelligent runs but passing slightly off-kilter.

Bernardo Silva – 9

Magnificent performance. Teased the Real defence relentlessly and topped it off with two contrasting goals.

Erling Haaland – 7

A constant thorn in the side of the Madrid defence although should have done better with early header.

Real Madrid

Thibaut Courtois – 8

Denied Erling Haaland twice in first half and again in second half but could do nothing to stop Bernardo Silva’s double.

Dani Carvajal – 4

Struggled to contain Jack Grealish on a harrowing night for the Madrid defence. Booked for dragging him down.

Eder Militao – 5

Back from suspension in place of Toni Rudiger, the Brazilian tried the same physical approach on Haaland. It didn’t work. Scored an unfortunate own goal.

David Alaba – 5

Overwhelmed by waves of Sky Blue runners. Could not cope with the onslaught though almost scored a free-kick second half.

Eduardo Camavinga – 5

The French international, restricted in attacking opportunities, was exposed by Bernardo Silva’s trickery.

Fede Valverde – 6

Wholehearted display from the Uruguayan but largely chasing shadows.

Toni Kroos – 5

Unfortunate to hit the bar with a terrific first half strike but otherwise struggled to influence the game.

Luka Modric – 5

The 37-year-old was made to look his age by City’s constant hounding and was replaced just after the hour.

Rodrygo – 5

Threaded a couple of decent passes but otherwise anonymous on the Madrid left.

Karim Benzema – 5

Starved of service, he searched far and wide for an opening but with little joy.

Vinicius Jr – 5

One of his quietest European nights in a Madrid shirt. Lost the battle with Kyle Walker
